Athlete Honorees

Steve Fender '03 – Football – One of the finest defensive players to wear the blue and red, Steve Fender earned First Team All-Ohio honors in 2002 after receiving Honorable Mention All-Ohio recognition in 2001. His outstanding play helped establish him among the premier football players in school history.

Dave Sala '83 – Baseball –  A dominant pitcher during his senior season, Dave Sala posted an 11-0 record while earning 1983 City League Player of the Year honors. He continued his baseball career at the University of Cincinnati before being selected in the second round of the Major League Baseball Draft, eventually advancing to the AAA level.

Tim Malone '85 – Baseball – Tim Malone was one of the most accomplished pitchers in school history, compiling an incredible 30-2 career record while helping lead the Knights to three City League championships. A two-time First Team All-City League and First Team All-District selection (1984 and 1985), Malone earned All-State honors in 1985 before continuing his collegiate career at the University of Cincinnati, where he posted a 9-5 record.

Darryl Roberts '06 – Basketball – One of the most dynamic scorers in program history, Darryl Roberts averaged 23.7 points per game during his junior season—the best mark in the City League—earning All-State Special Mention, All-Blade Team, First Team All-City League, and First Team All-District honors. As a senior, he averaged 18.1 points per game, was named City League District Player of the Year, earned First Team All-City League, First Team All-District, and Second Team All-State recognition before continuing his career at the University of Akron.

Roman Willets '09 – Swimming – Roman Willets captured the 2009 Ohio state championship in the 200-yard freestyle, cementing his place among the school's elite swimmers. He continued his career at the University of Michigan, where he served as a team captain on the 2013 NCAA National Championship team.

Coach Honorees

Craig Schaefer – Football & Track and Field – For more than two decades, Craig Schaefer helped build one of Northwest Ohio's premier football programs as the Knights' defensive coordinator for 22 seasons, contributing to Ohio state championships in 1984 and 2001. He also spent 19 years coaching track and field, leading athletes to eight City League/TRAC shot put and discus championships.

Ann Urschel – Swimming & Water Polo – Ann Urschel served as St. Francis' head swimming coach for 10 seasons while also leading the water polo program for two years. Under her leadership, the Knights captured the 1996 Ohio swimming state championship and water polo state titles in 1990 and 1991, while also finishing as state runner-up in swimming in 1991, 1994, and 1995.

Team Honoree

1965 Football Team – The 1965 Knights forever changed the trajectory of St. Francis football by capturing the school's first City League championship. Finishing 8-1, with their lone loss coming by just two points to Scott High School, the team outscored opponents 142-33, recorded six shutouts, and produced eight players who went on to compete at the NCAA Division I level. In an era before the Ohio state football playoffs, the team established a championship standard that future generations would build upon.

Golden Knight Honorees

Rev. Ron Olszewski, OSFS '62 – As an Oblate, alumnus, principal, president, teacher, Foundation chairman, and today as a volunteer, “Father O” has dedicated nearly the entirety of his life to serving God and others through St. Francis de Sales School. During his presidency from 1978 until 2015, St. Francis graduated thousands of students, maintained high standards of academic excellence, and won 19 state athletic titles and dozens of district championships. Additionally, he is the past president of the Rotary Club of Toledo, and former chairman of the Toledo City League.

Sean Carroll '77 – An internationally recognized evolutionary biologist, Sean Carroll’s work in science, media, and education has significantly advanced the understanding of molecular biology and genetics. At age 33, he was recognized by Time magazine as among the nation’s 50 most promising leaders under 40, alongside Bill Gates, Jaime Dimon, John F. Kennedy, Jr., Condoleezza Rice, and Oprah Winfrey. His work in media production has been recognized with two Emmy Awards and an Oscar nomination.

Service Honorees

Bob & Sue Savage – As past parents (Bob ’85, Eric ’88, Mark ’93, Matt ’97) and devoted benefactors, Bob & Sue Savage have profoundly advanced St. Francis through their philanthropy. The family’s relationship with the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales extends more than 75 years to Bob’s days learning from the Oblates at Central Catholic High School, their previous assignment before SFS was established. In 2025, Bob & Sue Savage generously committed the largest Toledo-based local donation in school history, an act that has encouraged and inspired generosity in others as well.

Mike Koralewski – As Chairman of the Development Advisory Committee of the St. Francis de Sales School Board of Trustees, Mike Koralewski has extended invaluable leadership in the school’s pursuit of Our Faithful Loyalty – The 75th Anniversary Campaign, the largest project in school history. In his role as Senior Vice President of Global Manufacturing at First Solar, he has been supportive of the Global Salesian Leadership Symposium, helping the event double in attendance since inception. A past parent (Collin ’21), Mike’s continued volunteer service, wise counsel, and philanthropic support has distinguished him as an exceptional friend of St. Francis.
