Directions
For this summer reading assignment, you are tasked with reading the novel titled Life of Pi. As you read the story, you must keep track of a journal that discusses how this story is constructed. What this journal will contain is your thoughts on multiple sections of your choice. I ask that you comment on one of the topics below for each journal, but you can’t repeat a topic. This means that for each journal, you should pick a new chapter and topic. The topics are listed below.
Example
Your first journal might want to talk about the themes present in chapter five. Another example is that you might want to discuss the characterization of the protagonist in chapter 10. You will submit one paper with five journal entries to me on the first day of class. Each journal should be at least one paragraph long, indicate which chapter you are responding to, indicate the topic you want to discuss in regard to that chapter, and have a correctly formatted paragraph. You do not need to address each topic. Rather, you need to address only 5.
Journal Topics
- Define the characterization that occurs in a specific section of the book.
- Define the theme that is used in a specific section of the book.
- How would you define the tone and style of a specific chapter or section?
- What are the morals and lessons to be learned in a specific chapter?
- How does the setting and location add to this chapter?
- What is the writer’s purpose for telling this story? More specifically, what is he trying to say in this section?
- Was the writer effectively telling the story in this chapter? Why or why not?
